Carbide Roughing Gouge (Kit from Rockler)

Rockler sells a carbide roughing gouge kit — bar, ferrule, and two cutters — for about the price of a single replacement cutter, so I built the handle myself out of laminated pallet wood. Getting the ferrule to fit snugly without over-cutting the recess took some care, and I finished the handle with a homemade mix of boiled linseed oil and varnish before installing the carbide cutter. Testing it against a skew chisel on the same piece of wood showed exactly what you'd expect: the carbide gouge is great for roughing out stock fast, but the skew leaves a noticeably smoother surface.
