DIY Pop-Up Workbench Dogs

I built a pair of pop-up bench dogs using a cheap cabinet latch mechanism from the home center instead of buying dedicated bench dog hardware. I drilled and countersunk a scrap block for the mechanisms, then turned my own 3/4-inch dowels from a piece of red oak that had fallen in our yard, since store-bought dowels aren't always sized quite right. They pop up and down with a single click and fit my existing bench dog holes perfectly.
