I made a parting tool for turning without spending a dime, starting with a rough old edger blade with a hole through the middle. I plugged the hole by welding in a scrap of metal from another blade, cut the blade in half lengthwise to get a longer, skinnier profile, then welded the two halves back together and ground everything flat and straight. A shop-made handle with a homemade oil-and-varnish finish rounds it out, and the thin eighth-inch-wide blade turns out to work great for parting cuts.
